| Subject: Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) Sun 21 Sep 2014, 10:37 pm | |
| What is a REC? A REC is a document representing proof that 1 megawatt-hour (MWH) of electricity has been produced from a clean, renewable resource, such as solar or wind.Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) owners have a sense of responsibility and commitment to the environment and feel as though they are making a difference. Why buy RECs? When you purchase RECs, you are supporting the production of more renewable energy in the U.S. Each REC represents all of the environmental benefits of renewable generation, namely the benefits that everyone receives when conventional fuels, such as coal, nuclear, oil, or gas, are displaced. Why is clean energy important? Electricity production accounts for more than 1/3 of U.S. global warming emissions, with the majority generated by coal-fired power plants, which produce approximately 25 % of total U.S. global warming emissions. Natural gas-fired power plants produce 6 % of total emissions.1 Global warming emissions trap heat, steadily drive up the planet’s temperature, and create significant and harmful impacts on our health, our environment, and our climate.2 In contrast, most renewable energy sources produce little to no global warming emissions.Who buys RECs? REC owners have a sense of responsibility and commitment to the environment and feel as though they are making a difference. How can RECs make a difference? Just one REC represents more than enough energy to offset an average American household’s electricity usage for a whole month! | |
